New Moon in Scorpio: What the Darkness Reveals

A dark, winding path disappears into a mist-covered forest beneath the shadow of a New Moon. Towering trees frame the journey ahead, while a fluorescent blue scorpion's tail glows from the darkness, revealing something that might otherwise remain unseen. The words New Moon in Scorpio: What the Darkness Reveals hover above the forest, with the second line fading softly into the shadows. An image of mystery, hidden truths, and the uncertainty of what awaits when we venture into the unknown.

"Not everything that is faced can be changed, but nothing can be changed until it is faced." — James Baldwin

On November 9, a New Moon is born in Scorpio — in the darkest waters of the zodiac, at one of the darkest hours of the night. And it arrives with a question most New Moons never ask. Not what do you want to grow? but what are you willing to release so something else has room to grow?

Scorpio doesn't do comfortable truths. It exposes the ones we'd rather leave buried. And somewhere beneath the surface, you already know what needs to go. Perhaps you've known for some time. But knowing something privately and having it brought into the open are two very different things. And soon, others may begin to see what you've been hoping no one would ask about.

What Begins in the Dark

Every New Moon marks the beginning of another lunar cycle, when the Sun and Moon meet in the same part of the zodiac and the Moon disappears from our night sky. It's traditionally a time for fresh intentions, new possibilities, and planting the seeds of what we hope to grow. But this New Moon doesn't hand you a pen — it hands you an eraser.

Beginnings don't always arrive with clarity, and this one doesn't even try. With the Moon hidden from view, we're beginning a cycle without being able to see very far ahead. There may be grief for what's being released, uncertainty about what remains, and questions we cannot yet answer. Not every beginning comes with a clear direction, and perhaps this one is asking us to resist the urge to decide what happens next before we've fully understood what is ending. There is nothing wrong with not knowing. At the beginning of this cycle, we're not supposed to have all the answers. We're supposed to sort.

More Than the Dark

Scorpio is fixed water, a strange combination when you think about it. Water naturally moves — rivers run, rain falls, tides rise and retreat. But fixed water holds. Think of a deep well, seemingly still on the surface, while everything beneath remains hidden. Now place Mars, a planet of fire and action, in charge of those waters. Fire meets water, heat builds, pressure rises, and what appears calm on the surface may be anything but. Eventually, something has to give.

Yet there is more to Scorpio than darkness and endings. Scorpions themselves carry a rather remarkable secret: under ultraviolet light, they fluoresce, revealing a glow invisible under ordinary conditions. Their protective armor hasn't disappeared, nor has anything new been added. Something that was already there simply becomes visible under a different light. And perhaps that is one of Scorpio's more interesting lessons. Sometimes what we discover isn't something new at all. It's something that has been there all along, waiting for the right conditions to reveal itself.

The scorpion isn't Scorpio's only symbol. The serpent also represents this sign, bringing with it the act of shedding what can no longer contain us. What once offered protection eventually becomes restrictive, and the old skin must be left behind. This is where Scorpio's gift of sight becomes important: the ability to see beneath appearances, face difficult truths, and discern what to keep and what to cut away. But sight can curdle. Perception becomes suspicion, loyalty turns to jealousy, and protection becomes control. Sometimes the sting turns outward, and sometimes it turns inward.

The Ruler: When Truth Demands to Be Seen

Every New Moon has a planetary ruler, and Scorpio's traditional ruler is Mars, the warrior planet. But there's an interesting contradiction here. The ruler of this dark, underwater Moon is standing in the brightest room of the sky: Leo, the sign of the stage and the spotlight, where authenticity demands to be seen. Scorpio dives beneath the surface in search of the truth, while Mars in Leo wants to bring what it finds into the light. What has been kept private may no longer be willing to stay that way.

And Mars isn't standing quietly in that spotlight. Old battles, familiar comforts, and versions of ourselves we've defended for years are being brought into question, with the volume turned all the way up. There is a pull between holding onto what we know and finding the courage to stand in what is true now. Perhaps the greatest challenge isn't discovering the truth at all, but deciding what we're willing to do once we can no longer deny it.

When the Darkness Answers

The Moon is in its fall in Scorpio, far from the comfort and security it naturally seeks. Here, emotions run deep, vulnerabilities are exposed, and truths we've tried to keep hidden become difficult to contain. With Mars, Jupiter, and the South Node in Leo pressing against this New Moon, something uncomfortable is rising to the surface. It may be an old wound, a situation we thought was settled, or a truth we've known for some time but hoped would remain undisturbed. Pride may get in the way, fear may cloud our judgment, and the temptation to defend what we've always defended can be difficult to resist.

As I studied this New Moon, the old Russian tale of Vasilisa kept coming to mind. Sent into Baba Yaga's dark forest, she faces frightening encounters and seemingly impossible tasks. She cannot fight her way through every challenge. She must pay attention, trust her instincts, and recognize when a different approach is needed. And perhaps that's where this New Moon is taking us. What if the way forward requires us to look again, approach things differently, rather than react as we always have?

There is vulnerability in having something exposed before we're ready, especially when we cannot control how others will respond. We may want to deny it, explain it away, place the blame elsewhere, or fight to preserve something that has already changed. But those reactions can keep us caught in the very situation we're trying to escape. The challenge is to look closely at what's being revealed, separate what we know from what we fear, and decide what genuinely requires our attention. We may not be able to choose what comes to light, but we can choose how we meet it. The gates are opening, and the journey through them is only beginning.

What the Darkness Asks of Us.

In Vasilisa's story, even the smallest things demand her attention. Among the impossible tasks Baba Yaga sets before her is the sorting of grain, separating what is good from what has spoiled. It is painstaking work, and there is no rushing it. Every grain must be examined for what it is, not what she hopes it might be. Perhaps that's the real challenge of this New Moon. Not everything before us belongs in the same basket.

This Scorpio New Moon begins in darkness, and we aren't standing at the end of the story with all the answers. We're at the edge of the forest, holding an empty basket, with the whole night ahead of us. We cannot know every challenge we'll encounter or what we'll discover along the way. But we can begin by paying attention, questioning what we've always accepted, and choosing not to repeat what has already brought us here.

What gets cut away in the dark gets seen in the light. Start sorting.
